Darkness in Charm City: Photographing Baltimore at Night
Baltimore is a city that is often overlooked, maligned and made fun of. But for those of us who have had the privilege of knowing it a little more deeply, it is a place of great inspiration and beauty.
Patrick Joust first came to Baltimore as an Americorps volunteer more than 20 years ago. Driving around in his car to various parts of the city, where he worked as a tutor for children and adults, he got to see the beauty of nighttime in the Baltimore. It took years before he would venture out effectively with his camera and take pictures, but once he got started, he never grew tired of exploring this complex urban landscape with its many layers of history.
In this talk Patrick will focus on the benefits of getting to know the place you live through photography. Baltimore taught him how to see and has influenced how he takes pictures elsewhere. He’ll talk about photographers and artists who inspires him, and how being in tune with changing weather and an ever-changing cityscape can make for interesting photography and, perhaps, a greater level of intimacy with the immediate environment.
